Speaker Information

Jeff Frimeth MSc., MCCPM, CIIP, MRSO, MRSE, CDIP, President and Chief Medical Physicist at JF Medical Physics Inc. presents on the Why Only Meeting HARP Quality Control Requirements Does Not Benefit Patients Today. The presentation This presentation will review the HARP Act and Reg. 543 and will follow with a more in-depth discussion on what QC standards are in-place for general radiography and CT machines. Other QC standards will be discussed as well, which exceed Reg. 543 requirements, but better provide opportunity for further quality and safety improvements for imaging facilities today.

Dana Alkhouli and Zaid Alhamzawi, MRT(R) Student discuss Is Technique Relevant When Using Standard vs High Resolution MDCT to Image Degenerative Lumbar Stenosis. The presentation will focus on describing the SLR and clinical implications of the SLT, CT L-spine protocol and variability, utility of High resolution compared to standard resolution CT, highlighting the challenges of partial volume averaging.

Izabella Barreto PhD, DABR, DABSNM, Clinical Associate Professor of Medical Physics at University of Florida College of Medicine presents onMedical Physics Essentials in CT: Balancing Image Quality and Radiation Dose. This session covers the fundamentals of image quality—spatial resolution, contrast, and noise—and connects these to the physical parameters that influence CT imaging. We’ll explore how radiation dose is quantified in CT, including an overview of dose metrics like CT dose index (CTDI), dose-length product (DLP), and size-specific dose estimates (SSDE), and discuss their relevance in assessing and managing patient exposure. We’ll review practical strategies to balance these elements, empowering attendees to adjust protocols, leverage dose optimization techniques, and make informed decisions that prioritize patient safety without compromising diagnostic integrity. This presentation will equip participants with a solid foundation in medical physics concepts essential to advancing safe and effective CT imaging practices.

Samantha Moraes MRT(R), CIR, CTIC, Education & Practice Lead, General Radiography & CT at Joint Department of Medical Imaging- University Health Network, Women's College Hospital, Sinai Health System presents on Perfecting the Shot: Best Practices in Positioning and Image Quality. The presentation includes how to apply a structured approach to assess radiographic images, ensuring critical structures (e.g., fractures, joint spaces, soft tissues) are visible and aligned for accurate clinical interpretation; how to use knowledge of positioning and image quality to identify subtle pathologies and improve clinical judgment, leading to more accurate diagnoses; how to engage in continuous learning and collaborate with peers to share insights and contribute to the improvement of departmental imaging practices.
